I know that the next 45 minutes or so we spend at this dimly lit Cambridge, Massachusetts, restaurant will be, in some sense, a waste of her time and mine, but that politeness or decency or some other vaguely moral compulsion will detain us at the table anyway, sipping bourbon-based cocktails and struggling to find a good topic to converse about.

The only way for many users to protect their information is for them to have never installed the apps at all, says the study The apps tested include the dating apps Grindr, Happn, OkCupid, and Tinder among others. San Francisco: Ten popular apps, including dating apps like Tinder, OKCupid and Grindr, have been found sharing people’s personal information with dozens of digital marketing and ad tech companies without users’ knowledge, according to a new study.

The only way for many users to protect their information, the study conducted by the Norwegian Consumer Council NCC says, is for them to have never installed the apps at all. The study took into consideration the activity of 10 popular apps during the period June to November in order to identify how personal data is transmitted from these apps to commercial third parties.

The apps were chosen for the study as they were the most popular apps on Google Play at the time in “certain categories where sensitive category personal data were deemed likely to be processed, such as data about health, religion, children, and sexual preferences”. Only the Android versions of these apps were tested, with NCC explaining that this was due to Android being the largest mobile operating system worldwide, in addition to Google being a key player in the ad tech industry, the report added.

Researchers from Check Point detailed the three-step attack method which would have enabled a hacker to target users:. OkCupid is one of the largest online dating service providers in the world, with an average of 50, dates arranged per week from around 90 million annual connections. As is the case in many other arenas, online dating services have become more of a target since the pandemic began, and the nature of the service means there are troves of private user data ripe for picking.

Dating apps Grindr, OkCupid, and Tinder are allegedly spreading user information like sexual preferences, behavioural data, and precise location to advertising companies in ways that may violate privacy laws, according to a study conducted by the Norwegian Consumer Council NCC. The study tracked the activity of 10 popular apps during the period June to November in order to identify how personal data is transmitted from these apps to commercial third parties. The ten apps were chosen for the study as they were the most popular apps on Google Play at the time in “certain categories where sensitive category personal data were deemed likely to be processed, such as data about health, religion, children, and sexual preferences”.

Only the Android versions of these apps were tested, with NCC explaining that this was due to Android being the largest mobile operating system worldwide, in addition to Google being a key player in the ad tech industry. Following testing, a majority of the ten apps were found to transmit data to “unexpected third parties”, with users not being clearly informed about where their information was being sent, and how it was being used. The study also found that Grindr was among the apps with the most glaring privacy issues as it failed to do the following: Share clear information regarding the way it shares data with non-service provider third parties; share clear information about how user data is used for targeted ads; and provide in-app options to reduce data sharing with third parties.

When analysing the data flow from the Grindr app, the researchers observed the Twitter-owned company MoPub acted as a mediation network, which facilitated personal data transmissions to other third parties, who then used the data to determine whether they wanted to purchase advertisements directed toward Grindr users. According to the study, MoPub’s advertising partners could also potentially distribute that user data to other companies under certain situations despite not receiving explicit consent from Grindr’s users.

Privacy-wise, Grindr encourages users to read the privacy policy from MoPub; meanwhile, MoPub’s privacy policy recommends that consumers read the privacy policies of the company’s partners in order to understand how their personal data may be used.

It said the majority of the apps did not present users with legally-compliant consent mechanisms. The council took action against some of the companies it examined, filing formal complaints with Norway’s data protection authority against Grindr, Twitter-owned mobile app advertising platform MoPub and four ad tech companies. Grindr sent data including users’ GPS location, age and gender to the other companies, the council said. Period tracker app MyDays and virtual makeup app Perfect were also among the apps sharing personal data with ad services, the report said.

In many online situations, self-misrepresentation is totally harmless. Who cares if your Halo 3 avatar is taller than you are in real life? But in online dating, where the whole goal is to eventually meet other people in person , creating a false impression is a whole different deal. People do everything they can in their OkCupid profiles to make it the best representation of themselves. I n mid-August, couples and lonely hearts packed a Brooklyn basement to hear scientists make sense of something the crowd could not: love. In , Rudder started OKTrends, an in-house blog for OKCupid, as a way to attract new members to a site that was nearly out of money. The posts covered such topics as the best camera angle for a profile picture and how people lie on their profiles — the mysteries online daters wonder about. All of a sudden, Rudder, a one-time indie actor and rock star, had transformed himself into a dating laureate for the data age.

Savvy book publishers took note. In Rudder proposed a book based on his blog, and Crown outlasted nine other publishers with a seven-figure bid. Accompanied by a slideshow, he brought up a chart 1 of how straight women rate the men on OKCupid based on their age. The crowd lost it — groans, hoots, hollers, total, uproarious laughter. Rudder demurred. The questioner interrupted. She was looking for a clear-cut answer, a capital-T Truth.
